Ok, so it's not a guitar. But Hickory nonetheless. My local hardwood supplier is going out of business and making deals right and left. When I went in to get some maple for this bench I found that he was pretty much picked over for maple but he suggested Hickory. He said it was MUCH more heavy than maple. I wanted weight so I thought what the heck. I started pulling out boards and he asked if I liked what I saw. "Sure," I said, "really pretty". He said that if I buy the whole stack (~200 bf) he'd sell it to me at cost. How could I pass it up. I figure there's got to me a good guitar back/sides in there somewhere. It's all 8/4 x 6-10" by at least 10 ft. My back still hurts from moving it all and that was a week ago. Anyway, here's the bench. Pretty much my own design. Compiled from many other designs I've seen during my research. 3x3 legs, all 1 1/2" stringers, 1 layer of 3/4 baltic birch and 2 layers of 3/4 mdf for the top which is 24" x 64". The thing weighs a TON. Next week I'm building another one but will do something different with the cabinet below. |

Very solid looking Paul. What is that maroonish center section made of? |

John, are you talking about the top? If so, it's MDF (medium density fiberboard). Great stuff. Solid, flat, HEAVY. |

Yeah, but where do the string go? Nice bench Paul but what I really want to know is did you get any guitar wood out of the load? |

Yeah, I'm sure there is some in there someplace. It's all flatsawn (which I'm not opposed to) but for the most part is really very clear. I'll probably dive into it a bit more next week and see what I've got. |

Paul: Don't waste your time on flat of rift sawn stuff. It's not worth it as I'm sure you are already aware. |
